Wayland Estate

Wayland Estate, on the West side of Battersea was an estate with broken, damaged paving, brick covered tree mounds and in a state of disrepair and degradation.
It was decided the paving should be renewed, steel bollards used to keep car and lorries off the paving along with new plant beds, dangerous wall demolished and re-built, a play area, and resin bound surfacing added to lift the safety, appearance and usability of the estate.
It is difficult to capture the various sections on an estate, but the below gives a taste of what we did.

Now with trees planting and Tiger mulch added.

A central area in the process of being re paved.

A small play area we installed with a timber climber and boulders set in resin   bound rubber.

The horrible raised section completely removed with a new brick raised planter and revised levels.

A bare earth mound that was transformed with new brick planter,

fresh soil, plants surrounded by new paving and bollards.

Being in the middle of an estate, allowing safe access during works was a challenge, but with our temporary paving system, we completed the work to a high standard without a complaint from one of the 80 residents that live there.

Thirteen sets of broken steps were replaced with appropriate hazard warning slabs.

A concrete base can be seen in preparation of new cycle stores.
New steel bollards to help keep cars and dust carts of the paving, previously smashed.

Lessons learnt!
It is difficult keeping access available to residents and visitors who wish to access their property, or link paths when you are ripping up the paving!!

To combat this, we liaised as best we could with residents as we worked around the estate, giving them notice of work in their area and working with them on timings to reduce as much as possible, any inconvenience.
We used (as can be seen) temporary paving to allow access during the works, lifting the temporary paving as we laid the new.

So, a challenging project in many ways, but completed on time and on budget without a single complaint from the residents (of which there were around 50 living in and around the paving work).
Communication and working with the residents, accommodating any of their requirements as best we could along with staff ready to listen and work with all involved in a polite respectful way along with safe working practices, dust and noise suppression means these tough urban projects can be carried out without upsetting people living with the work one week to the next.
